To All Members

Myself, Trevor Mellard (Sec) and Keith Stephens (Treasurer) attended a presentation at Harbour House on the 4th September to find out the future of the West Pier. The presentation was given by Mr Rob Gray the Port Manager employed by ABP (Associated British Ports). The pier acts as a defence between the failing sand dunes and the River and needs considerable remedial work. As you all know the pier is in a state of dangerous decay, having been off limits to fishermen and the Public for a long time. Whilst we found the proposed work to be promising we are very concerned by the apparent lack of interest or support by Swansea City Council. ABP have put aside some £15m to carry out the work but this might not be enough to finish the work and to give back a complete pier. It may only cover the cost of restoring the walled defences which will mean that the pier may never be reopened to the public. From our viewpoint there is also the issue of access to and from the Marina which will be affected in 2020 and 2021 whilst work is going on. I could give you all a full report here on what has been discussed and proposed. I believe it would be better if you could instead follow this link to their website and read the full version of issues etc.

Can I encourage everyone to update themselves on the situation. Also please send Rob any questions that you may have by using the "get in touch page" on the website. An email or letter from you as individuals to your Swansea Councillor would also add to the pressure that clearly needs to be brought upon SCC to take action
