Bass - 2017 measures
Ministers agreement reached 14 December 2016
Recreational fishing rules for bass remain the same at one fish a day per angler for the latter half (July-December) of the year.
A proposed monthly bag limit for anglers was rejected meaning that anglers have once again been disproportionately affected when they have by far the lowest impact on stocks and deliver the greatest economic benefit from the fishery.

4. From 1 January to 30 June 2017 in recreational fisheries in ICES divisions IVb, IVc, VIIa and from VIId to VIIh, only catch-and-release fishing for sea bass, including from shore, shall be allowed. During this period, it shall be prohibited to retain on board, relocate, tranship or land sea bass caught in that area.

5. In recreational fisheries, including from shore, not more than one specimen of sea bass may be retained per fisherman per day during the following periods and in the following areas:

(a) from 1 July to 31 December 2017 in ICES divisions IVb, IVc, VIIa and from VIId to VIIh;

(b) from 1 January to 31 December 2017 in ICES divisions VIIj and VIIk.

6. From 1 January to 31 December 2017 in recreational fisheries in ICES divisions VIIIa and VIIIb, a maximum of five fish per fisherman may be retained each day.

New EU recreational fishing restrictions for Sea Bass in 2017 (including fishing from boat and shore)
  • From 1st January to 30th June catch and release only
  • From 1st July to 31st December one bass per angler per day
  • Minimum keep size of 42cm still applies.
In ICES areas VIIj and VIIk from 1st January to 31st December one bass per angler per day
The image below outlines the area concerned…
The 42cm MLS is probably still insufficient. A female bass of 41 cm at start of the spring spawning period will not be a viable spawner, as their sexual maturity is around 46cm. By the time the following annual spawning period arrives, she will be approx. 46 – 48 cm and she will spawn for the first time. IF, with a 42 cm MLS she is caught during that 12 month period and retained (perfectly legal) she will have been killed BEFORE ever spawning. To ensure all females have at least one spawning, a MLS of 48 cm (2 lbs – 10 oz) is required.

To avoid paying the £10 again renew your membership for 2017 before 31 December 2016.
